Unladen weight, or tare weight, refers to the weight of the tractor and trailer when empty. A container's net weight is determined by subtracting the gross weight (laden weight) from the net weight (net weight).

An intermodal container is usually marked with the tare weight so that when the equipment is loaded, the gross weight can be calculated accurately.
